BIAL or Bangalore Airport International Limited is considered one of the best and busiest airports in India today. Though its still behind in its grandeur compared to Mumbai or Delhi, it’s quite functional, seamless and easy to use. The airport is 45km outside city limits poses commuting challenges. One of the most cost-effective and convenient ways of commuting to/from the airport is using the Bangalore Airport Bus Service better known as ‘Vayu Vajra’ run by BMTC. These buses operate across the city via various routes and result in over 250+ trips every day. I have been maintaining and updating the timings since 2015 on this blog for more than 3yrs now. For the uninitiated, the new name of Bangalore is Bengaluru while the name of the Bangalore Airport is actually Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (BLR).

This post will provide you with the details on the various bus routes, timings along with fares. The buses run at a frequency of about 30mins throughout the day and are the perfect alternative to hiring a cab especially for solo travelers.
Being a bus service, you obviously need to plan better and it takes slightly longer though do not make the mistake of considering these services low in quality. These buses are not treated like just another public transport. All the buses are air-conditioned and manufactured by Volvo. You will have a smooth, cozy ride while staring at the Bangalore cityscape around you with all the traffic mess under you. 🙂 The below information is the latest I found at this time. With the launch of a complete Purple & Green phase of Namma Metro, the connectivity with Bangalore has improved further. Reach Majestic and hop on the metro. Check the Metro timings and route here.
Also, while buses are the cheapest way to commute to/from the airport. There are a lot of Bangalore airport cab services also available to take you right to your doorstep. In the updated 2018 schedule, a few new routes have been added. Also, the frequency of buses has been increased showing a shift from the earlier approach of reducing frequency.
Most airport buses cross Hebbal flyover, Mekhri Circle and there is a high frequency of buses through the day from Majestic or Kempegowda Bus Stand. So if you are around these areas, it may be simpler to just take a cab to these destinations and then board the bus.

Now that you are familiar with the routes, it would be handy to know what are fares being charged on a routes basis. You would realize that these buses are extremely pocket friendly compared to a cab if you are traveling alone. For a group of 3, opting for a cab service may prove to better.

These buses are very useful for those who travel to and fro Bangalore Airport. But if any commuter wants to use this facility for other stages in between. The buses have a electronic display board which keeps scrolling. A commuter waiting in any bus stop can not make out the route unless they are conversant with the routes. A newcomer will not know the routes and will depend on the display board. But the bus will leave the stop before the display completes the scroll.
I had earlier in 2012 suggested to the BMTC to have a regular display like other BMTC buses so that the passengers are not left guessing about the route and destination( buses coming from Airport). Make the facilities more user friendly

Thank you for sharing that thought. That indeed is a valid issue but looks like the authority want the buses to be mainly used for Airport commute. I have boarded vayu vajra buses being familiar with the route but yes one still needs to check with the driver to be sure.
There should be a simpler way of solving this though. Like adding a board at bus stops which has the Vayu vajra route charted out and that is something maybe even civilians can add in some places.
Thanks for the response- partially agree with your view but it is a public transport and facilities will be a criminal waste if it is restricted only to people commuting from & to airport.
Even Rajdhani trains have the facility of picking up passengers midway and only restriction is that one end of the journey should be either starting point or end point.
When I wrote earlier I received an acknowldgement but that is the end of it.
The scrolling board does not serve any purpose to anybody as no one gets to read it fully? Another criminal wastage of public money. They can display the route in each bus stop where these buses stop OR why not a simple board like any other BMTC bus?

It would be nice to have the bus timings against stops and also the exact place of the stop as some places are quite big, for instance, Coles Park, its a very big park, so if new comers dont have a clue which side of the park to wait for, chances could be either a long hunt or miss the bus.

Yes sir it is quite safe for a single lady as well on this Bus servuce. At least 4-5 people remain on this Bus
Most of the international flights come during midnight . There is no service during tag time . Instead of big buses the BMTC can deploy smaller buses like 30 seater or so . Tat may be profitable too for the corporation .

Firstly I would like to commend BMTC authorities for the introduction of the Vayu Vajra
I am regular user and since I travel a lot within India I have seen transport from airport to city across many places and I feel BMTC service is BY FAR best of the lot.
In fact many of my colleagues, family members and friends too have said the same.
Yes, there is scope for improvement and I think Vayu Vajra management team should look into these areas
1) Electronic kiosks at the bus stations to display route details , bus arrival and departure timings
2) These could be multilingual at a minimum , Kannada, English , Hindi , Tamil , Telugu and Malayalam
3) They should explore 24/7 service as there are many international travellers who can use these services
4) Luggage racks to be installed back in the buses may in the centre, OR ELSE a luggage hold at the base of the bus
5) Maintaining the buses in good condition both in LOOKS as well as performance

Bus number 7 is never on time from the airport to origin. I’ve waited for more than an hour to go from esteem mall to forum a couple of days. I end up taking a cab after waiting so long. This is so annoying. U come out of your house believing that you’ll catch this only bus which will take you to ur destination. However you end up waiting for hours, that too at the cross section of that wide 3 lane road, away from the actual bus stand because sometimes when u wait at the bus stop, the buses take the middle lane and leave you behind helpless. Authorities please see to this concern if the passengers of ur routes are important to you.
Non availability of buses after 11pm till about 4am is a big issue. Most of the flights to & fro BIAL, especially going to/thru the Gulf region (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Muscat, Saudi, Bahrain etc and from there to western destinations) are mostly at nights. As stated by another traveller, BMTC must introduce night time buses also (otherwise it should not crib when private operators provide the service).
I agree as well. Maybe at a lower frequency but it would be good to have a few buses running.
In fare list nothing mentioned about fare for kids. Will any body tell what is the fare for kids(below 12 years age)traveling in the bus? Because these bus(KIAS-4) conductor charges full fare for below 12 years kid though it should be half as per Govt. rule.

You will have to opt for a cab. Buses will not work for your flight time. They start at 4am in the morning.

Not 100% sure but I do not think there is a bus from Banashankari Bus Stand. Jayanagar 4th Block would be best.

I had an issue recently. I had my flight from Bangaluru airport at 8:45 am and Had to travel from Koramangala .I searched for airport bus (vajra vayu) in the mybmtc.com official website and found that there is a bus at 5:25am from Koramangala via Ejipura Jn. I waited at Ejipura Jn from 5:30am to 6:20am for KIAS-7A (vajra vayu) but was in vain and Finally I had to book a cab to reach airport.

Hey Raghav – It indeed looks like a typo. Based on the arrival time of the buses, it can be clearly seen that there is a 50mins interval between the two buses. Will update this post.

Will the buses departing KIA drop you off at locations between scheduled stops? I need to get off at Sahakar Nagara (Kodigehalli Gate), but the nearest scheduled stop is Military Farm. It is interesting that there is no stop by Sahakar Nagara, which by now is a densely populated neighborhood.
It really depends on the driver. I have mostly seen that they are ok with stopping on the way.

KIAS-9 is operational at 3:05am. Most other routes start at 4am.

5:30 am is tricky. You cannot rely on Buses. Cab is your best bet. But you can choose to pool the cab and save some money if you are lucky.

Catch the 7am bus. Should reach gottigere around 7:10am. If you web-checkin, you can also take the 7:20 bus reaching gottigere at 7:35pm but I wouldn’t risk it.

The BIAL Vayu Vajra Service Map you’ve shown is inconsistent with the tables having route details. The map talks of BIAS 11 going to Chikkallasandra. But the tables don’t have any bus going till there at all. This inconsistency is there even in the BMTC web site – https://www.mybmtc.com/airportservices.

I just came to know that these buses also operate during 1am and 4:30am with half the frequency, although it is not mentioned on BMTC website or the timetable above. Is this for real? because that will be a big advantage for early morning travellers
Some routes yes. If you noticed the timings of individual buses, you should be able to identify the ones that run late in the night.

Do you mean chamrajpet? If yes, then take an auto to Majestic and catch the Vayu Vajra bus from the main bus stand. Try to catch the bus at around 2pm.

You should be able to catch the bus near central which is coming from electronic city or HSR. It’s traffic time, so try to catch bus around 7:40

Buses should be run based on most flight timings which helps all of us(commuters).Also its strange to see in a city like bengaluru doesn’t have airport designated bus stops and jus a small board which is confusing to new comers.I could only foresee that it has been advantage for cabs/private transport who encash this issue(almost 1400 I pay for commute where as my flight ticket cost is less than this ).BMTC should improve a lot in public transportation.
FYI : I have been to different cities in south and found Hyderabad airport is operating well/successful in public transportation with its designated airport bus stops and they have quite match with flight timings(based on number of flights are flying in that duration).

From Hebbal, you should get a bus around that time. But the frequency is low. There are a lot of cabs that pick people for airport on the way. Not reliable but an option.

Yes, that should be fine.
The bus service starts running slow after Hebbala. There is no point of paying this high charges for this bus service. Sometimes when crowd is not there the bus waits for some minutes to see expected passengers in various city bus stop. Instead of this they should start a shuttle service with more timing up to Hebbala from aiport and viceversa. From Hebbala people can go wherever they want. Also people can come to Hebbala and take bus for going to Aiport.
Also from Airport to Chennai(without going to city) directly a busservice should be started.

If the 5 member includes a kid or the cab guy agrees to take everyone 1 one cab, Cab will be cheaper and faster. Bus will also reach on time but since there are 5 of you, it will cost more.

This is to inform you that, the conductor on airport bus are charging addition ?25 as service tax that too in the form of paper ticket rather than providing a e-bill for the full amount.
They are providing ?122 as ticket fare and are providing e-bill for the same but in additional they are charging ?25 in the name of service tax, if it is really a service tax then it should be taken along with e-bill, why they are providing paper tickets.?. This is misleading and corruption going on please stop this thing as soon as possible other wise people will beat them because as soon as people ask for the same they start fighting in kannada.
The issue is really serious. Conductors are cheating with customers and this stop as soon as possible. Other a media person will raise the issue very soon then entire company will be affected.
This seems to have started from 1st June across all KSRTC State buses. The justification provided at this point is that the pricing has not been updated on the E-ticket system yet. Applicable on outbound buses to other places as well.

Most of the queries are to reach KIAL from different parts of the City directly!
Why can’t you to advise them to reach Mekhri Circle bus stop where almost all the Vajra buses stop. It is relatively easy to get BMTC other buses or auto from different parts of the city to reach this point and take the Vajra bus from here ( Mekhri Circle) to airport which is still around 30 Km away!! Do you see any merit in this suggestion?
There is definitely merit and I have recommended the same to quite a few people. But the reality is most folks are looking for a Vayu Vajra bus that can board closer to their stop. Also the fact that mekri circle is quite far for a lot of people and the fare difference is not much. Before anything else, I would like to advice people to read the timetable here before asking the questions. 🙂

Shanthi Nagar would be your best bet and a lot of Airport buses go there – KIAS – 5, KIAS – 12. Just ask at the bus stop once you get down from the airport.
Also it will easily take you 60-90mins from airport to shanthi nagar. Plan your ooty bus accordingly.

Airport Toll but not sure if any bus will stop to give you a drop. Getting a lift may be a better bet.
I am assuming you are talking about the toll just before one takes the flyover to head to the airport. Its only about 10mins away from there anf all KIAL bus cross this point.

If you want to catch BIAS-8 for this flight, you will have to catch the 5am one from tin factory. Your will reach by 6:30aam. Otherwise you will have to take bus to mekri circle and take any vayu vajra from there. But that will be more of an hassle.

It take about 40-45mins for KIAS-8 to reach KR Puram from BTM. You should have atleast 90mins in hand to reach airport from there. With that info, the timetable should help.

most of the international airports in india have good convinience except bengaluru air port. this airport has not good facilities for common person say some body wants to see blr airport they have to spend min 600 rs in addition airport entry fee. non ac bus facilties not available here and even nearby locality within 5 km also same there is a toll gate also

i think in india bus fare at bangalore is highest compared to any metro cities petrol and diesel cost almost same nearby chennai there here bus fares are quit reasonable

Do not think there is a direct bus from airport. You can take the bus to electronic city and then take an auto or another bus from there. But that ride will be long. There are several other break journey options as well. Recommend you to refer google maps.

You need to reach Majestic also known as Kempegowda Bus Stand. A lot of buses go to Kalasipalayam from there. The frequency is good. Simply head to the bus stand at the airport and enquire.

The KIA 12 bus from Airport to BTM 2nd stage has a scheduled departure at 5.40 am from the Airport. The bus used to reach Hebbal by 6.00 am. In the last month , we haven’t seen this bus reaching Hebbal prior to 7.00 am. Can you please let know if this particular 5.40 am service has been cancelled?

The bus stops before /near toll gate to issue tickets when bus is full.This is an irritation and waste of time.

About 3:30am. Since there isn’t really a published time for the specific stop this is more of a guesstimate based on Gmaps.

You can catch KIAS-6 from HAL Bus Stop instead of going to Majestic. Please check the timings of KIAS-6 for reference.

Quite freuquent! Both KIAS-5 and KIAS-12 cross Shanthinagar. Since its closer to peak office hours, keep about 2.5hrs in hand.

There is no Driver’s number available and in practice I have seen the airport buses pretty diligent on the schedule. Please refer to the timetable on this blog for timings.

There is space to keep your luggage in the bus which is quite generous. Don’t think there is a KG limit. If you can fly with in, you should be able to take in the bus along.

To catch a flight that early, you should ideally opt for the cab. Leave by 2:45am, reach by 4am unless you have only hand baggage.

there does not seem to be direct Vayu Vajra buses specifically from those locations. You may have to head to Silk Board or Jayanagar based on proximity to catch a bus.

Bus for Bellandur at that hour would not be possible. Mostly you will get bus till Majestic and then you will have to take cab. Would recommend opting for a cab.

You can opt for KIAS-7 and it should cost around Rs260-300. While leaving you shoudl opt for a bus around 6pm as that’s peak traffic time. Check the blog post and estimate time from HSR Bus stop.

You can take KIAS-6 or KIAS-8. Please check the time it takes for Marathali from Kadugodi and Electronic City. Add that to the starting time to find your ideal time. You should leave 2-2.5hrs before your flight time.

You can take the KIAS-8 for Silk Board which is quite close to Madiwala or KIAS-7 which goes via Koramangala. Just land and walk up to the bus depot to figure out which bus is leaving earlier.

Lookup KIAS-8 timing. You need to reach an hour before and it will take min 2hours, so plan accordingly.

I think it leaves around midnight. You are better off taking an Uber-pool. Its a little more expensive than the bus at that time of the night.

Based on my experience, buses run as per schedule and are pretty reliable. Anyway since mekhri circle is closer to the airport, in case the bus service does not show up, should be easy to catch the flight. Keep enough time in hand. Also, do share your experience here so that other’s will find it helpful.

I did get a KIAS-5 around 01:27 am from Mekhri Circle. BTW, there are quite a few cabs that go empty for airport pick ups offering drops around the bus stop for Rs. 200-300.

You are right, most cabs end up crossing mekri circle so shouldn’t be too difficult but one obviously cannot rely on that. Great tip though!

There is a bus that starts from Jeevan Bima Nagar. You can board that.
For international flight you should reach 3hrs early so should look at a bus around 6pm.

I do not think there is a KIAS bus that starts from the railway station. I think KIAS-10 starts from somewhere close. So you will have to take an auto to the nearest bus stand which is about 2kms away. Let me know if you found it to be otherwise.
Bought a vayu vajra airport monthly bus pass.this morning at 6.30 KIA4 did not stop at the scheduled stop esteem mall inspire of signalling the pass and hand which has caused a lot of inconvenience.please advice
That’s really not expected. Generally all Vayu vajra buses stop diligently at their dedicated stops. Do re-verify if you were standing at the right spot. If yes, it may have been a one-off case. Since you are using the monthly pass, hopefully you can share your experience on other days.

There are 2 buses via Jayanagar. One is from BTM i.e. KIAS-12 and another is from Banashankari i.e. KIAS-5. You will need to be 2hrs of travel time in hand. So pick the time accordingly.

You can catch KIAS-8 from JP Morgan as per the mentioned timing. The frequency is not very high, about 1 per hour. The bus will take about 90mins, so estimate the right time to board accordingly.
